## Quick summary

Lip treatment swelling often changes most noticeably in the first few days, then gradually settles over the following period. The early appearance is not a reliable guide to the settled appearance.

At Core Aesthetics, Corey Anderson RN asks patients to watch the pattern: whether swelling, colour, discomfort and asymmetry are settling, stable or worsening. Contact the clinic if symptoms feel concerning, and seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

## Why Can Lip Swelling Change In Stages?

The lips are mobile, vascular and sensitive. This can make early swelling look more dramatic than swelling in some other facial areas. Swelling can be affected by individual anatomy, medicines, skin sensitivity, previous treatment, aftercare, hydration, heat, exercise, sleep position and the plan used.

The early mirror check can be misleading. It may exaggerate border, volume, projection and asymmetry. A cautious review separates early aftercare from settled appearance assessment.

## What Are Common Lip Swelling Stages?

The table below is a general aftercare guide. It is not a diagnosis and it does not replace individual instructions from Corey Anderson RN.

Timing
What may be noticed
What matters

Immediately after the appointment
Puffiness, tenderness, small marks, firmness or unevenness may be visible.
Follow clinic instructions, avoid pressing the area and do not judge the final appearance.

First 24 hours
Swelling or bruising can look more noticeable than it did in the clinic.
Avoid heat, alcohol, vigorous exercise and repeated mirror checking unless Corey has advised differently.

Days two to three
Swelling, bruising, firmness or mild awkwardness with movement may still be present.
Watch whether the pattern is settling, stable or worsening rather than checking minute by minute.

Days four to seven
Many patients notice less reactivity, although bruising or small differences can remain.
Contact the clinic if swelling, pain, colour change, heat or asymmetry is getting worse.

Review period
Assessment becomes more useful after early swelling has had time to settle.
Corey reviews comfort, healing pattern, symmetry, movement and whether any further advice is needed.

## What Happens Immediately After Treatment?

Immediately after treatment, the lips may look puffy, uneven, tender or firmer than usual. Small marks or bruising can be visible. The early shape can look different from what was discussed because swelling is sitting over the treated tissue.

At this stage, avoid pressing, rubbing or repeatedly checking the lips. Keep the area clean, follow Corey's instructions and use any cold-compress advice only as directed by the clinic.

## What Can Happen During The First Day?

For many patients, swelling is more noticeable on the first day than it was in the clinic. The lips may look fuller, less even or more projected than expected. This is usually the least useful time to judge appearance.

Unless Corey gives different instructions, avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise, hot environments and very hot food or drinks early on. These can make swelling or bruising more noticeable in some people.

## What Can Happen During Days Two And Three?

Swelling may still be obvious during days two and three. Some people notice bruising more clearly at this point. The lips may feel firmer or slightly awkward when speaking, eating or smiling.

The key question is not whether swelling exists. It is whether the overall pattern is gradually settling or becoming more concerning. Increasing redness, heat, severe discomfort, unusual skin colour, spreading symptoms or symptoms that feel wrong should be checked.

## What Can Happen During Days Four To Seven?

Many patients notice that swelling starts to look less obvious through the first week, although this is not universal. Bruising may still be present. Small differences between sides can remain while tissue response is changing.

Do not make decisions about further treatment during this phase. The better question is whether the area is becoming more comfortable, less swollen and less reactive. If the answer is no, contact the clinic.

## Why Is The Review Period Different?

Corey will advise when review is appropriate for your treatment plan. The review period gives swelling time to settle enough for a more meaningful assessment of shape, movement, comfort and symmetry.

Review is not a sales checkpoint. It is part of clinical follow-up. It gives the clinic a chance to check how you have recovered, answer questions and decide whether any further advice is needed.

## How Should You Track Swelling Without Over-Reading It?

It is reasonable to notice swelling, but checking constantly can make normal day to day variation feel alarming. Use consistent lighting, avoid pressing or manipulating the lips, and compare symptoms over time rather than minute by minute.

What matters clinically is the pattern: improving, stable, fluctuating or worsening. Worsening pain, unusual colour change, marked asymmetry, heat, spreading redness, fever or symptoms that feel severe should be treated as a safety question, not an appearance question.

## When Should Swelling Be Checked?

Contact Core Aesthetics promptly if swelling is increasing instead of settling, if discomfort is worsening, if skin colour looks pale, dusky or mottled, if the area feels unusually hot, if redness is spreading, or if you simply feel worried by what you are seeing.

Seek urgent medical care if symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, involve vision changes, or you cannot reach the clinic quickly. Cosmetic aftercare advice should never delay urgent medical assessment when symptoms are concerning.

Core Aesthetics consults by appointment at 12A Atherton Road, Oakleigh VIC 3166. Call [0491 706 705](tel:+61491706705) if you need clinic advice about aftercare or review.

## What Should You Not Read Into Early Swelling?

Early swelling can make the lips look larger, uneven or sharper than the settled appearance. It can also make older asymmetries more obvious for a short period. That does not mean the settled appearance will match the early swelling pattern.

At the same time, reassurance should not be lazy. If the pattern feels wrong, is getting worse or comes with worrying symptoms, the right response is contact, not internet comparison.

## Can Treatment Happen On The Same Day?

Some adult patients may be suitable for treatment on the same day as consultation, but this is not automatic. Suitability depends on assessment, medical history, timing, consent, risk and whether proceeding is appropriate.

If swelling, previous treatment, active symptoms or uncertainty changes the clinical picture, Corey may recommend waiting, review, referral, no treatment or a separate planning appointment rather than proceeding.

## Frequently asked questions

How long does swelling after lip treatment last?

Swelling varies. Many patients notice the biggest changes in the first few days, with gradual settling after that. Corey will advise when review is appropriate for your treatment plan and symptoms.

Are uneven lips during swelling always a problem?

No. Early swelling can make the lips look uneven while tissue response is changing. If asymmetry is worsening, severe, linked with colour change or worrying symptoms, contact Core Aesthetics promptly.

When is lip swelling most noticeable?

For many patients, swelling is most noticeable in the early days after treatment. The early appearance is not a reliable guide to the settled appearance, so review timing matters.

What should I avoid while my lips are swollen?

Follow Corey's individual instructions. In general, avoid rubbing or pressing the lips, vigorous exercise, alcohol, hot environments and very hot food or drinks early on unless advised otherwise.

When should I contact the clinic about swelling?

Contact the clinic if swelling is increasing instead of settling, discomfort is worsening, skin colour changes, redness or heat spreads, asymmetry worsens or anything feels wrong.

When should I seek urgent medical care?

Seek urgent medical care if symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, involve vision changes, or if you cannot reach the clinic quickly and symptoms are concerning. Aftercare advice should not delay urgent assessment.

Can I judge my settled lip shape in the first few days?

No. Early swelling can exaggerate volume, border, projection and asymmetry. The first few days are better used for aftercare and safety monitoring rather than judging the final appearance.

Will Corey review my swelling?

Corey will advise when review is appropriate. Review may be needed sooner if symptoms are worsening or concerning. A planned review is more useful once early swelling has settled enough for assessment.

Can treatment happen on the same day as a lip consultation?

Some adults may be suitable for treatment on the same day, but this is not automatic. Assessment, medical history, consent, timing, expectations and risk determine whether proceeding is appropriate.

What if swelling lasts longer than expected?

Persistent or worrying swelling should be discussed with the clinic. Corey may recommend review, monitoring, medical input, referral or another appropriate next step depending on symptoms and timing.

Is this page personal medical advice?

No. This page is general education for adults considering or recovering from lip treatment at Core Aesthetics. Follow your individual aftercare instructions and seek medical care when symptoms are severe or concerning.
